Having grown up during a time when I actually got to see this movie in theaters to seeing this extended cut today brought tears to my weary, nostalgic eyes. I know pretty much everyone involved in the original film's creation hated making it but please know that for me it will always hold a special place in my heart.
My only tiny suggestion is to have edited music cues hit more accurately on scenes - for instance the title sequence featuring the logo of the film was about frames slower than the orchestra hit in the main title background music track. Very nitpicking stuff otherwise excellent work. Can't wait to see the next cut hopefully featuring full CGI work done to the deleted devo chair splatter scene!! I've been waiting for the extended cut for over a year!
I've been going on and on and on to my friends and family about it and now it's here! It certainly was well worth the wait! All the extended scenes really do help fix the plot and character arcs. However I was a little disappointed that we still don't have the scene where Mario and Luigi are in the jail cell arguing about family pride. I do remember seeing a clip of it in an old promo for the movie where Luigi says "You told me to go after her Well done, cheers and keep up the good work!

I'd never seen the original I was born in '91 and never got into video games so it wasn't on my radar , but I really enjoyed this movie on both its own merits as a film a worthy and visionary forerunner of the blockbusters of the video-game-action-horror movie genre that peaked for my generation of movie nerds in with Resident Evil: Retribution and as a constructivist interactive art project.
The "visible edges" and video aesthetics of the rough cut added a whole level of enjoyment for me as a devotee of the Soviet avant-garde concept of showcasing, rather than obscuring, the scaffolding and workmanship involved in producing art, inviting the audience to intellectually participate in the process of co-completing a purposefully "unfinished" work. This constructivist aesthetic perfectly suits a film that was 1 a totally new experiment in genre the live-action video game movie and 2 centered on the adventures of proletarian heroes fighting against an evil capitalist-monarch.
I hope that if you all ever release a more polished version based on digital sources that you'll keep this VHS rough version around as an art piece and educational document of the creation-restoration process.
